We no longer wish to walk if we are not trampling gems and precious stones underfoot” (Seneca)

Rome, via dei Giubbonari 23

“The House of Marbles”  is in the heart of the ancient Rome, just in the middle of a cross between S.Peter church, Campo dei Fiori, Piazza Navona (Navona Square), Piazza Venezia (Venice Square), the Coliseum and the Roman Forum, the Isola Tiberina see the map>>

The isola Tiberina

Just one minute of walk from the house, you will find a small island on the historical Tiber. Because of this legendary river the Roman Empire was founded

The Ghetto

Three blocks from the house, the Jewish ghetto of Rome is among the oldest ghettos in the world; it was built 40 years after that of Venice which is the first ever. The term derives from the name of the Venetian district, gheto, where there was a foundry (precisely gheto in Venetian), where the Jews of that city were forced to reside; another possible etymology traces the origin of this word back to Hebrew, which means separation

The Colosseum

The Colosseum, the icon of Rome,  is the largest amphitheatre built during the Roman Empire. Inaugurated in 80 AD, it offered gladiator fights, executions and animal hunts

Castel S. Angelo

The castle occupied a strategic position on the Tiber river. Because the Vatican would later fall outside the city walls and turned out to be difficult to defend, Castel Sant Angelo was connected to the Vatican by a tunnel in 1722. This way, the castle served as a refuge for the Pope and treasure chamber to secure the valuable church possessions in case of an attack on the Vatican and the St. Peter’s Basilica.
